Specifically non-apple ones. Currently have an HTC One Max, which has been great, except for the loss of bluetooth. Looking for at least a 5" screen, battery life, and general reliability. Leaning towards Pixel XL, considering G6 and Force Z thing. However, I’m wary of Motorola after the last one I had, they forced a ton of OS updates to it that were beyond its capability, essentially bricking it.

Samsungs are the honda accords of the android world. Nothing too fancy, but they get the job done (besides the note 6 or whichever one exploded). I got a galaxy S7 from work that’s been pretty rock steady. All day battery, good screen, quick and speedy, and my only ocmplaint is the external speaker is a bit crap.
Good accessories portfolio too. I recommend the galaxy line.

I have a Google Pixel and it is without a doubt, and by far, the nicest phone I have ever used. It is so smooth and fast and it just works. It will get software updates months before other phones and the camera is still one of the best on any phone you can buy right now. The only big feature it is really missing is being waterproof. Which for what it’s worth I have seen tests that show that even though it doesn’t have a waterproof IP rating, in actual practice it has been shown to be very water resistant.
Motorola phones were good before they got bought out by Lenovo, now it seems like they are still trying to find their way again but they are getting there. Lg phones are fairly hit or miss but if you are considering one I would say take a look a the V20 instead of the G6... or just wait another month or so because the V30 should be coming out around the end of next month, and the Pixel 2 is going to be right behind it.

Google has treated me well, honestly.
I’ve been using Android phones direct from Google (the Nexus line) for years. Currently using a Nexus 5X that I bought at release in Oct of 2015. The Friday night before the long 4th of July weekend, my phone died. It’s a common problem with a series of LG produced phones, unfortunately. I hopped on the PC, started a chat with Google tech support, they explained that my phone’s warranty expired in October of 2016, but they were aware of a flaw with the 5Xs. The support rep that I’d been speaking with asked me to hold for a second so she could talk to her supervisor. Five minutes later she was getting my address to ship a new build replacement (not a warranty/refurb phone) to me, with an upgrade from 16GB to 32GB memory, at no charge.
While waiting for my replacement to ship to me, I pulled out my Nexus 4 from 2012, plopped my SIM card in it, and it ran surprisingly well (5 years outdated) for the week I needed it.
I’d planned on looking into a new phone when Google (presumably) announces the Pixel 2 in October(ish), but may not as I’ve now got new hardware, as opposed to two year old hardware.
I’d also take a look at the OnePlus5. They’re similar to what Google originally did with the Nexus devices: well equipped phones at mid-range pricing. The only thing I’m not satisfied with OnePlus is their OS. They run a modded version of Android, as opposed to the bone stock version Google ships on the Nexus/Pixel devices (I’m a big opponent of manufacturers baking their own apps/modifications into the OS). The Pixel will cost more (and I’d suggest waiting for the 2 to announce if you can wait, no point in buying a phone that’s 10 months into an annual upgrade schedule), but it’s also kitted with the latest and greatest.

Similarly to you, I have a bad taste in my mouth after a bad Motorola (Droid X2; also had the original Droid, which was excellent). Switched to Samsung for the Galaxy S3, then a Note 4. I now have a Pixel XL.
I was very, very pleased with my Note 4 and was intending on keeping it indefinitely until its software shit the bed in April. The Pixel XL is probably the best phone I’ve ever had, mostly because of the pure Android experience, though I gotta say I miss the pizzazz of the Samsung phones. The Note 4 was a revolutionary monster when I got it, and I loved showing it off. Heck, the Galaxy S3 was a showpiece when new, too.
However, we all know how Samsung’s “features” really end up as gimmicks, and while I do miss the S-pen on the Note, I’m totally happy with the Pixel XL. But, like someone said below, the next generation of Pixel is coming in a couple of months, so don’t get one now.

Ugh 5inch and up screens. Thats like the maximum I am willing to deal with. So hard to find something with a small screen though that isnt also a terrible phone. I’ve been very happy with my Sony Xperia Z3 Compact but eventually it will be outdated and I will have nothing to replace it with. Battery life is the biggest problem with the giant phones, the screen just uses all the juice. I love having 2 day battery life.

Sony Xperia Z3 compact here. Its a couple years old so some things have changed with the new ones.
The processor runs fast but warm. I like the glass feel but its safer and not as slick in a case. The camera is flat out incredible. 23mp (newer ones are 19 but quicker)
Im happy with it even though the durability has been on the lesser side. Few other phones pack as much punch in the sub cant hold this one handed size.
I use one i bought on amazon runnin on ATT but if you wanna use Verizon or Sprint you may need to see if theyre supported because sim card

Same here runnin a z3 compact. Im glad they did a z5 compact and i think something out now has a 5 inch screen.
I need power but i need something not taking all my pocket.
I just wish the durability was a little more solid. Mine gets hot occasionally and the screen seems to have dislodged itself just enough that im aware of it

I have an iPhone 6S, but my girlfriend has a Pixel and likes it a lot. It’s had the least problems of any of her Androids, meaning that it’s notable when it has a glitch, instead of just something that happens multiple times a day.

I will try to wait, but not having bluetooth sucks. Especially when trying to diagnose bluetooth issues at work, which are usually caused by apple phones.

If you mean an apple thing. No. They cause so many stupid problems on any non-apple device they connect to. Our if you mean samsuck, again, no, because everyone I know who’s had one had a ton of problems and multiple warranty replacements.

Totally would if I wanted to over pay for something that causes problems with any other device I want it to connect to and has an interface I just plain don’t like. Not to mention I use a charger and corded headphones at the same time!

The G6 is a nice phone. Fast, simple, waterproof, great camera and decent battery life. I have zero complaints. Plus, you can get then fairly cheap and they have a two year manufacturer’s warranty instead of the industry standard one.

Depends a bit on your price range. I’m in the new-phone hunt right now and have been for a few months now. I’ve been with HTC for my last and current phone (HTC One M7 & M8 respectively) and I think you’d be hard pressed to find a better deal than a used HTC 10.
I was considering the GS7 but I’m not a fan of the glass back as they littler Ebay in broken form. I looked at all the other “cheap” phones as well, the One+ 5, ZTE Axon 7, etc. Unfortunately, even on the used market, I wasn’t able to find anything close to as good of a deal as any of the recent flagships phones.
If you’re buying for Sprint then the phones are cheaper, around $190-200 used. If you need GSM then they’re a bit more expensive, around $250 or so for a decent used one and more expensive for phones that are unlocked. In all of my research I just haven’t found a better deal than a used flagship phone.

The two year warranty is definitely enticing.

I like to go for new flagship phones, mostly just so they have the specs/power/whatever to handle a couple years worth of use and updates without being useless after the first year. For example, my one max still is still better than most cheaper phones currently for sale. I would keep it longer, but the bluetooth issue is a real problem for me.
![]() 07/21/2017 at 14:16 |

Yeah I could see how that would be an issue. I agree, flagships pretty much give the best price/performance/longevity so that’s what I’ve always tried to grab.
Luckily my M8 has been pretty solid, but I got my hands on a 10 and was like “upgrade time!”.
![]() 07/21/2017 at 16:06 |

Yeah, thats why those little 2 inch screens on older phones suck. But somewhere in that 4.5 inch range is the sweetspot of usability and compactness.

Dude, talking about durability I literally just broke my screen today lol. This one only lasted 2 weeks!!! The first one I had for about 2 years and then I dropped it really hard and it broke. But then I bought a new one on Ebay since it was cheaper than fixing the screen and lo and behold, it just broke after 2 weeks. This time while I was working on my Miata, it was just in my pocket. Still, must have crushed it or something.
Anyways, I did a bit of research and bought the tools and replacement parts for both screens. Got it down to $100 total to DIY fix both, so I plan to fix them, try to sell one, and then have the tools to easily replace it again in the future. Still a pain to have it break so easily...

My hands are big enough that I can one hand a 6" screen. Takes a little effort and deft movement, but I can do it. 4.5" feels tiny and I hate it.
![]() 07/21/2017 at 16:59 |

Be careful of the connection point at the board where the ribbon cable connects when you swap those screens out. I think when I tried my first time I fouled it and now I get light but no action on my first one. (dropped it on a stone floor, still had action going on before I got in there) Though i also may have overheated it trying to get the adhesive to loosen so I had access in the back.
Also, depending on where you sourced the adhesive for the screen it can be an honest pain to get aligned.
Best of luck getting them going. I like my little sony and it’s hyperactive orange color.

I figure I’ve got two tries so I’m bound to get at least the second one right lol. My first one also had a faulty headphone jack so I’m replacing that while I’m in there. I’m thinking about using the old one as a permanently installed dash cam in my car. I’m sure there’s some Android apps that would make that work well. It can do 1080p 60fps video so that wouldn’t be a bad idea. Could run track addict and set it up for autox as well.

I’d wait until there is a sale on Amazon for unlocked phones or something. I’m currently using a Moto X Pure Edition (2015) that I bought late last year. You usually see the prices drop around late summer-early fall.
